The Gospel According to Job

Job 8-9 1. Beware of right theological ideas woven into the wrong theological explanation. Beware of right theological premises and wrong theological conclusions. P1: God does not pervert justice. P2: People suffer if and only if God is punishing them justly. C: Your suffering (or that of your loved ones) is right punishment. Just because someone has “truths” does not mean they have Truth. What tools has God given you? Christ the center of the universe Scripture, God’s word written Christ, the center of scripture The Holy Spirit of truth The church’s teaching and community 2. A parade of true things does not necessarily make them apply to you (or your conversation partner!). 3. No one can judge God. This fact is moral, ontological, and practical. -Job recognizes his “proximate innocence,” (Psalm 19:13), ultimate guilt, (Psalm 19:12), God as the source of all right and all might (Rom. 3:19), that much calamity (and blessing) will be general, falling on the just and unjust (Matt. 5:45), that creation’s pain is shouting the curse of sin and pointing towards salvation by grace (Rom. 8:18-21). 4. You must despair of life as it is in order to reach out for life as Jesus gives it (25-32). 5. You cannot wash yourself. -A mediator will . . . bring you together with God, be God in approachable form, bless you because of who he is, not who you are.
