Baptism: What is in Christ? Who is in Christ?
Colossians 2:11-13 "But the holy virgin gave birth to a temple united to the Word" - Cyril of Alexandria God dwells with us through the temple of Christ’s flesh. πλήρωμα, pleroma. 1a. Jesus is true God. 1b. Jesus is true man. 2. Christ fills us because we are united to him by the Holy Spirit. 1Cor. 3:16-17 “The Circumcision of the Heart”: Deut. 10:16, 30:6; Jer. 4:4, 6:10, 9:26 The deep problem of human life is the fact that we can’t listen because our ears are uncircumcised; we can’t love God because our hearts are uncircumcised. Rom. 8:11 3. Christ’s baptizing you in the Holy Spirit is the gospel. Eph. 4:4-6 4. Our baptism in water proclaims, displays, and participates in Christ’s baptizing us in the Holy Spirit. Application A. Are you baptized in the Holy Spirit? B. Have you been baptized in water in a manner that imitates the supernatural death and resurrection that Christ brought upon you as you enter the new covenant? C. Love the church for all the right reasons.
