“Jesus Is from the Right Line: A Broken Family for a Broken World”
Matthew 1:1-4 1. Jesus as the Messiah is both ancient promise and new beginning. a. The Messiah is a lowly servant before he is a king. b. The Messiah becomes a king only through the labors of his victories. c. Why Abraham? All of early biblical history turns on Abraham. -God embeds his promise within the line of a broken family. -God scatters the families of the earth so that he might save all the families by one family. -Not only does Jesus fulfill every promise to David, he fulfills every promise to Abraham. 2 Cor. 1:20 “For all the promises of God find their Yes in [Christ]. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory.” 2. From the very beginning, God has been planning to save your family through this family. -Your family is broken, and so is this one. -Jesus will make you spiritually rich and royal forever. Every name captures another feature of God’s wondrous plan. The meaning of your life is fully told only when it is traced to Christ. Jesus is not embarrassed or disappointed to be associated with sinners in his family because, after all, his whole mission is to become the head of a family of sinners. Rom. 8:28-29 3. God will use both your regrets and your quiet years. Genealogies need permanence and, thus, truth and memorability. Whether famous, infamous, or unknown at all, you and your family line have hope in Jesus.
