Working on the Whole Jigsaw: How Job Helps Us Hold God’s Whole Picture

Job 15-17 1. Don’t answer empty words. This road allows two-way traffic. Who has the empty words, Job or Eliphaz? No matter their source or sincerity, words must be tested. True or False? “The Lord always repays immediately (or at least very quickly) our deeds with just and right measures.” Does your “iniquity teach your mouth?” 2. Don’t let sin spin stories. -Our conscience must be bound to God and our mouth bound to conscience. -Instead our deceitful heart is bound to sin and our mouth bound to that heart. 3a. The righteous often suffer without an immediate cause or purpose, known to humans. 3b. The wicked often receive special mercy that rankles our sense of justice. Who sins with his mouth, Job (15:11-14) or Eliphaz (15-35)? 4. Experiencing destitution is a common, and fast, road to deeper wisdom. 5. God is in charge of all pain, whether judicial or not. Job wants the truth ironclad: some suffering is innocent. Time both does and does not “heal all wounds” (v. 12). 6. Your Hope already descended into the dust and rose again.
