Doing Good and Getting Good in the Christian Life
Job 4-5 The flow of thought in Eliphaz’s speech: a. We can refuse to listen to the advice we would often give (4:1-5). b. Fear of God gives you confidence! (4:6). The answer is so close to correct… yet so far away. c. God judges those who act unjustly and uses means of the “natural outcome” of the world (4:7-11). Natural course: sowing and reaping divine intervention: breaking teeth of the lion d. No one can stand before God. (4:12-21). e. To whom will you turn? Are you going to advance a case against God? (5:1-7). f. Turn to God! He does marvelous things (5:8-16). g. God is merciful; his disciplining will turn to blessing if you turn. (5:17-27). Application 1. Never having an answer and always having one are each signs that your wisdom is not tuned to God’s world and will. -Proverbs do not describe every situation. -A true statement + a false statement = an invalid conclusion 2. When it comes to suffering, neither give up your theology nor turn up your nose. 3. Give sage advice, not prophetic revelations. 4. Perfect peace comes not by uninterrupted strings of wisdom.
