Personal Pleading or Pugilistic Prattle?
Job 10-12 1. You can pour out your heart to God (10:1-7) What must God be like if he not only tolerates but bends his ear toward the misery of his people? Investigating God as if he were a man can be used to highlight that he is not! 2. Because the earthly-only telos is good, it is ok to mourn its loss; because it is not ultimate, our lives cannot actually be measured by it (18-22). Telos: mature final form of something Interruptions remind us not to judge any life only by the telos this lifespan. Does Job Plead or Prattle? Zophar’s words pin Job with pugilistic prattle 3. When you suffer, do not search the depths of God’s mind; search the depths of his heart. 4a. Ultimate understanding is owned by no one (12:1-3). 4b. Your friends may mock you; God does not (12:4). 4c. Beware the contempt of those doing well! (12:5). Idolaters = those who “bring their God in their hand.” Who is God? The question the suffering burns into your life. 5. God is in no one’s hands; in his hands are all things! 6. True human wisdom must sometimes “understand” God with awe, rather than explanation. God will strike you down the most simply by showing you himself! You will be awestruck by his power. And you will be awestruck by his suffering.
