Why Not Sin? The Whole Christ
Romans 6:5-11 1. You match Christ in death—and resurrection. -“the likeness of his . . .” The phrase avoids saying that we must truly make the sacrifice that he made and carefully insists that we must truly join the sacrifice he made. 2. The whole you for the whole Christ. “no longer to serve . . .” 3. Our future confidence cannot allow present cynicism. -“Where I go, I am going with Christ.” -“What is true of Christ, will be true of me.” How can this be our judgment of the past and not the future? Only through cynicism. How can this be our judgment of the past and the future but not the present. Only through absurdity. These judgments are our past, present, and future—through faith. 4. Sin’s dominion ends with death. In what sense did “death have dominion” over Jesus? Christ’s pattern: a one-time death to end the old age, ongoing life in the new. 5. Consider Christ carefully and consistently. -“If you don’t know who you are, then you don’t know what to do.” -If you don’t know who Christ is, then you don’t know who you are.
