Ruth 4:15-22 1. God is doing what he has been doing from the beginning. -Your life and your generation accomplishes what God has been doing from the beginning. a. God invests your life in “generation after generation.” b. Trust the Author. 2. You most easily see God’s work when he uses surprise and weakness to reveal himself. -The family tree was almost destroyed. -What a surprise to find out that this family tree was David’s! -The family tree reaches back to “kingly Judah.” The genealogy highlights the long tragedy and suffering through which the family would produce the anointed kings. 3. You are often unable to see God’s work when he is pleased not to reveal his specific purposes. There are times when God operates in our lives on a “need to know” basis, and we don’t always need to know, only to trust and obey. -Gary Phillips What is the Messianic hope up until the time of Ruth and Samuel? -“Kings will come from you . . .” (Gen 17:6, 16, 35:11). -“The scepter shall not depart from Judah. . .” (Gen. 49:10). -“A star shall come out of Jacob . . .” (Num. 24:7, 17). -“One from among your brothers you shall set as king . . . (Deut. 17:15). -“[Yahweh] will . . . exalt the horn of his anointed” (1 Sam. 2:10). -“You will be shepherd of my people Israel . . . (2 Sam 5:2; Mic. 5:4). If God saves you in the Messiah, he can do anything. “Who are you?”
