Romans 14:1-4
vv.1-4 : Only the Master Should Be Pleased In All Things.
vv. 5-12: Your final account should show how you aimed to honor God.
vv. 13-23: Pursuing peace in perpetual difference is part of God’s plan.
1. Faith firms up.
2. Welcome believers to “incorporate” them—not to “fix them.”
“Opinions” / dialogismon
Lk 9:46; Phil 2:14; 1 Ti 2:8.
Notice: this is not about essential doctrine; rather, we are not increasing “important topics” and winning them for sport.
3. If you withhold welcome, if you increase “topics” for others to fit, you act as their Lord.
Do you want to be a master?
4. You are no one’s all-sufficient supply for the Christian life.
The presumptions behind nit-picking:
-You need me to do everything for you!
-You must not live (and die) with anything out of place!
Instead,
-God intends all Christians to abide by his word and in the Spirit.
-All Christians will live (and die) with errors of judgment and proneness to sin.
5. God—and only God—makes us stand at the judgment!
