A Two-Way Mirror: How Looking to Christ Helps Us See Others and Ourselves

1 Thessalonians 1:6-8 1. Imitate godly examples. Because we follow Jesus, all Christians know what to imitate. (1 John 2:20-27) 2. Develop sharper knowledge of a larger number of examples. Because we have individual circumstances, Christians grow in knowing what to imitate. 3. You have an example to set! Following the world, affliction and joy do not mix. Following Jesus, affliction and joy cannot help but mix. 4. Godly imitators become examples. Whether you are young, a new believer, or struggling, whether you are old, an “stale believer” or a muddling along believer, God can take you in an instant and provide a tupos, a pattern for others. “Madame, before I was a genius, I was a drudge.” -Musician Jan Paderewski “In my walks, every man I meet is my superior in some way, and in that I am his pupil.” Ralph Waldo Emerson 5. Encouragement displays the organic, “biological” unity of the church.
