A Humble Christmas: How a Servant Should Follow the Savior

Philippians 2:6-11 The Flow of the Letter In sweeping terms, Paul appeals for humility and unity in the church; he now warrants his appeal with the most powerful proof: Christ. High and “Low” Christology in the Christ Hymn -Jesus was possessed of the full advantage of his being God—inwardly and outwardly. (v. 6a). -Jesus did not focus this fact on himself. (v. 6b). 1. You have problems God must fix. -Instead, he used divine privilege to be a suitable Savior for his people. (v. 7a). -Willfully, he emptied the “outwardness” of divine equality, adding human nature. (v. 7b) 2. You have a creaturely nature God must take. -Though fully obedient, he humbled himself unto a cursed death! (v. 8). 3a. You have a dying soul God must save. 3b. You have a guilty verdict God must satisfy. -Having accomplished such a salvation, his outward expression and treatment now match both (a) his divine nature and (b) his work (v. 9). 4. You have a Savior who “has it all.” 7. All peoples will reverence him as the One who “saved his people from their sins” (Mt. 1:21) (v. 10). 5. You have a knee that must bow and tongue that must speak. -The praise of the Son is also the glory of the Father (v. 11). 6. You have a God whose glory is your good.
