Help, I Am a Hypocrite!
Romans 2:17-29 The religious self-excuser’s main thing: hypocrisy. hypocrisy: hypocrite: Matt. 23:28; Mark 12:15; Luke 12:1 1. Do not count outward appearance as inward righteousness. Gal. 2:13 2. Any name—Jew, Christian—can prove to be hypocrisy without love of God and heart transformation. The Sun and the Moon / The Lamp and the Glow-in-the-Dark Ball Verses 25–29 gives two answers to the one who thinks the law must be salvation’s source: 1. The principle of law is perfect obedience. 2. God acts in the gospel to save his people. The sign must “count“ by pointing to a true inner reality. 3. God has always been after the heart. The circumcision of the heart (Dt. 10:12-21). Application Questions What is my confidence? “The Holy Spirit is working on my heart: cutting, softening, changing.” Am I trying to earn anything? “I just love God’s delight; I love his pleasure and joy. I love what he loves.”
