Scattered to Be Gathered: How Sheep are Saved by the Shepherd
Matthew 26:30-35 1. Jesus looks beyond his death to the resurrection; the disciples see only the death. 2. God is sending one like David yet surpassing David, fulfilling what to truly means to go before the people like a messenger of God. a. “David” points to Jesus b. The Holy Spirit makes our right response possible. c. We will see God—somehow visible. d. God will be pierced, killed. e. We will mourn our sin. f. God gathers and cleanses his people. 3. God opened a fountain of cleansing from sin and uncleanness for the scattered families of God’s people. 4. The New Covenant in Jesus has the power to fulfill all our needs. Eph. 2:13-14; Rev. 21:3-4; Rev. 22:16 5. God’s eternal, untouchable plan is to love his people in the glory of his Son. 6. The death of Jesus scatters his people. The new life of Jesus gathers his people. Jesus is our hero who never fell away but was killed for our sakes. 7. He will accomplish our salvation without us, and he will hold us to himself.
