Psalm 34
1. Invest yourself in various praises.
- 1 Samuel 21:10ff refers to Abimelech by his personal name, Achish, this Psalm by the hereditary name of Philistine kings.
2. Commit yourself to praise no matter the circumstances.
3. God will deliver you from all your fears. Trust in him.
4. The way to taste God‘s goodness is to think, pray, and praise hard about your life’s circumstances.
- God is the only one we ultimately regard
- we take shelter in him,
- and we receive from him the good that we need.
5. Take comfort, Christian, in what God sees and knows.
- Brokenheartedness brings nearness.
- We should expect that God’s chosen ones experience common afflictions and deliverance.
• What this does now is focus on an (1) Everyman, on (2) David himself, and (3) on the One who will fulfill all that is said of David (John 19:33-37).
God himself will be pierced, looked upon, and wept over.
6. Affliction purifies the righteous but slays the wicked.
