As Sudden as Lightning, As Late As Vultures: How God Ends Ages

Matt. 24:15-28 The “Abomination of Desolation” and Typology type / typos : pattern/repeating 1. Nebuchadnezzar, 605 BC (Dan. 1:1-2; 5:1-4, 22-23) 2. Antiocus IV Epiphanes, 167 BC 3. Roman conquest of Hasmoneans, 63 BC 4. Plan for Emperor Caligula’s bust, AD 40-41 5. The Zealot’s misuse of temple grounds 6. Roman destruction of Jerusalem, AD 70 7. Further Roman desolation in the Bar Kockba rebellion, AD 135 8. Ultimate sacrilege of Antichrist (Matt. 24:15, 2 Thess. 2:3-4; 1 John 2:18, 22; 4:3; 2 John 7; Rev. 13:8. (Chart adapted from the work of commentator David Turner, Matthew, BECNT, (Grand Rapids, Baker, 2008), 579). In Jesus, finally we have a temple that cannot be desecrated. 1. God has designed not only your personal confession but your actions in the world to reveal who your family is. 2a. Expect great trial that shakes and sorts the people of God. 2b. Expect that trial to be held back from ever becoming the new status quo because of God’s mercy. 2c. Expect God’s mercy to be grounded in his love for the elect, those he’s chosen, those he has taken as his beloved. 3. Expect others to point here-and-there for a “new leader from God.” 4. Don’t “fill out the picture” with human guesses. 5. Who is in charge of you? God does, God controls, and only God could predict the last things.
