The Lord’s Supper: A Picture-Preaching of the Gospel and a Sign of Covenant Confidence
Matthew 26:17-29 Setting the Table: In principle the Passover highlights our need to: A. Escape from judgment by covering with blood B. Purge sin from the house. C. Jesus knows all that will come to pass. D. Human beings do what they want to do. God is in control. 1. Because Jesus knows what will happen, every step is sacrificial, a free act of laying himself down. The same God who gives the Passover command becomes the Passover lamb. Lev. 16:20-22; Heb. 13:11-14 2a. Jesus understands betrayal, just like you. 2b. Jesus knows betrayal far more than you. 3. Jesus builds the New Covenant in and upon the Old Covenant celebration. Jesus fulfills all the Passover regulations but also inhabits them in order to establish the new ordinance of the new covenant: the Lord’s Supper. 4. God took on body and blood precisely so that he might shed body and blood. (Heb. 10:3-5) 5a. Already his blood is effective for you and me. 5b. Not yet are we fully with him. 6. Taking Jesus for salvation is internal, total, and constant. Christ gives the Supper to the church to help us grow in grace.
