2 John 1. Join the “Holy Family.” -“Elect lady”—God’s call originates life in the family. -The truth creates and sustains the bond of love in this new family. 2. To get divine grace, mercy, and peace, think “truth and love.” -The Trinity: unity and distinction 3. Fulfill your joy in new, “truth-filled” generations. John’s Cycle of Safety: Love in order to keep the commandments; keep the commandments in order to love. 4. Christmas confesses Christ come in the flesh. Early heresy: docetism Early solution: the celebration of Christmas -Guard against deceivers by testing love with truth and applying truth with love (v. 7). -Guard against yourself by building on the gospel again and again (v. 8). We are tempted to define love apart from what John calls "the teaching of Christ,” leaving only our feeling and emotional response as a measure. 5. The frail child of flesh brings us the fullness of God. “That which is not assumed is not healed . . .” -Gregory of Nazianzus 6. Joy is complete in the presence of Christ’s people.
