“The Stench of our Refuse, the Strength of His Resurrection”
Philippians 3:4-11 1. The worthlessness of advantage in the flesh is proclaimed by one who would have every advantage from it. Verses 4–6: “I am perfectly well within the (fleshly) pattern and expectation revealed for godly people.” 2. Faith in Christ requires reversing values. – We “reckon” gain and loss. – Inevitably and naturally we reckon certain things to our credit and advantage (some inherited and some “earned”). The gospel leaves no possibility of “adding in” Christ to these gains or vice-versa as some kind of supplement. – Count all as loss so that you can count Christ as all. 3. By believing, accounting, reckoning, trusting, -Know Christ -Gain Christ -Be Found in Christ. 4. What about the good things I love and care for in life? What about my sanctification (“growth in godliness”)? “Count” everything not for its own sake but for Christ’s. Trials and sufferings provide an intimate, experiential knowledge of Christ. 5. You are qualified in Christ for the promise and power of resurrection.
