Salvation is a Blessing: How God’s Gifts Have Not Changed
Romans 4:6-8 Doctrine of scripture observations: -Paul cites earlier scripture in progressive revelation. Highlights divine authorship. -Paul cites David by name—his story and particularity. Highlights human authorship 1. God has always “credited” righteousness. -not infusion, not intrinsic 2. Works don’t count for the imputation of righteousness. -not imputed on the basis of work What is true blessing? 3. We own our sin; we are identified by our blessing. Hebrew parallelism: the “what” (verse 7) and the “how” (verse 8) 4. God relieves the guilty of the burden of sin. The Logic of Verse 8: -God is the judge. -I am the guilty defendant. -God does not reckon the guilt to me. God has been declaring the guilty righteous, setting sinners free by his grace—and doing so the whole time, whether in the time of Abraham or David or us.
